Inaugural Midwest Adaptive Open set for September 2025

Central Links Golf, in partnership with other Central Region Golf Associations, is excited to announce the Midwest Adaptive Open to be held September 10-11, 2025. This new Championship will be played at Sand Creek Station in Newton, Kansas, home of the 3rd U.S. Adaptive Open Championship, hosted by the USGA in the summer of 2024. The Midwest Adaptive Open will be open to golfers of various classifications of impairments, such as individuals with arm and leg impairments, amputations, blind golfers and those with neurological and intellectual impairments.

The Central Links Golf community experienced first-hand how inspiring Adaptive Golf is with the U.S. Adaptive Open last summer. Central Links Golf staff and volunteers were able to be on site in various capacities leading up to the Championship and during the event. The USGA provided a great blueprint from which to work and internal discussions of hosting a Midwest Adaptive Open began after the conclusion of the U.S. Adaptive Open. We are hoping to follow in the footsteps of Georgia State Golf Association, Arizona Golf Association, Golf Association of Philadelphia, Iowa Golf Association and others in providing playing opportunities for all demographics and playing abilities. Central Links Golf is partnering with staff representatives from many of the Central Region Golf Associations to develop an Adaptive Championship for golfers in our local community and all over the country.

“Sand Creek Station hosted a great US Adaptive Open in 2024. The players enjoyed it and the golf course staff and volunteers went above and beyond for the competition. We thought it made sense to continue to partner with Sand Creek Station to provide a competitive opportunity for the adaptive golf community on a yearly basis,” Doug Habel, CLG Executive Director said. “We’re excited to work with our Allied Golf Association Central Region partners to make this a championship that crosses state lines and includes as many players as possible. We think it will be a successful championship and a highlight of the national adaptive golf calendar for years to come.”

The Midwest Adaptive Open will consist of 36 holes of stroke play on September 10-11 with a practice round day hosted on September 9th. The field will be limited to the first 60 applicants and will be open to anyone from around the country to participate, not just Central Region members. Golfers with physical and intellectual impairments who have a handicap index of 36.4 or lower are eligible to compete in the championship. The Midwest Adaptive Open is open to male and female professional golfers and amateur golfers.

“We were honored to host the 3rd U.S. Adaptive Open in 2024 and are thrilled to continue championing adaptive golf by hosting the inaugural Midwest Adaptive Open in 2025,” Sand Creek Station General Manager Dustin Housh said. “We look forward to welcoming incredible athletes and fostering an inclusive environment for all golfers as we continue to support adaptive events in the future.”

As Central Links Golf and its partners prepare for the Midwest Adaptive Open over the coming months, there are many ways for the community to be involved:

Volunteering: Volunteer signups will be available May 1st. More details on how to get involved will be released closer to the championship, but live scorers, rules officials, ball spotters among other needs will be welcomed. To learn more, please contact Taylor Maloney at taylor@clgolf.org.

Partnerships: Central Links Golf and Sand Creek Station are seeking partnerships for the Midwest Adaptive Open. If you are interested in a partnership opportunity, please contact Taylor Maloney at taylor@clgolf.org.

Registration for the 2025 Midwest Adaptive Open will open March 24 at 9:00 a.m. The entry fee of $175 will cover competition rounds, a practice round, range and cart fees, food and refreshments, and prizes. An Overall Champion for men and women will be crowned as well as individual champions in each sports classification. More details and information will continue to be released in the coming weeks.

Jayne Clarke Elected Central Links Golf President

Central Links Golf is excited to announce Jayne Clarke as our new President, effective November 20th. Jayne takes over for Greg Dunn, Central Links Golf’s first President. Dunn led the association from its conception and recent merger, formerly Kansas Women’s Golf, Kansas Golf and Kansas City Golf Association. Clarke served as the Vice President under Dunn and has now been elected as the first female President of Central Links Golf. Jayne has been involved in the golf community for many years as a competitive player and in former leadership roles.

“Golf has afforded me the opportunity to meet so many individuals from across the state and forge many friendships I wouldn’t have had otherwise,” says Clarke. Former President of the Kansas Women’s Golf Association, Jayne has a history of leadership and hopes to continue to forge friendships and use connections to lead the association.

“The last couple of years have been consumed by the successful merger of associations and conducting competitions in a world with Covid-19. One of those events would have been enough to deal with, yet Central Links Golf staff and board successfully managed to navigate both,” Clarke says regarding the recent hurdles faced by the organization. Her vision for moving forward is one of strategic planning and reflection on what we can do better.

“Now we need to focus on how we can utilize the combined strength of the organization to better serve a growing golf community,” Clarke comments. Her plan is to focus on a strategic planning process over the next few months to set new goals for the association.

“I’m looking forward to what comes from the discussion; we do have some challenges, but growth is a challenge many associations would envy.”

Central Links Golf supports and looks forward to how we grow and reflect over the next few months to continue to serve our members in the best way possible. We are excited about the possibilities in 2022 and beyond.

In addition to Jayne, the board would like to welcome our new additions to the board: Ryne Fisher, Chad Fuqua, Gary Hruby, Chris Robinson and Kurt Vollertsen. To see a complete list of our executive committee and board members, please click here.

Kansas City Golf Hall of Fame Inducts Four

On Saturday, November 20th, the Kansas City Golf Hall of Fame welcomed four outstanding honorees as the Class of 2020. The induction ceremony had been on hold due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The inductees are Rob Wilkin, Head Professional at Heritage Park GC;  Amateur standout Steve Groom of Raytown ; the late David Fearis, superintendent at Kansas City’s Blue Hills Country Club from 1985 to 2000; and Mary Jane Barnes, the first woman to lead the KCGA as President.

These four individuals enter the Hall on a vote of the Board of Directors of Central Links Golf, representatives of the Midwest Section PGA, the Heart of America Golf Course Superintendents Association, former members and emeritus members of the Board, and all living members of the Kansas City Golf Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame was created in 2012 as part of the celebration of the first 100 years of the KCGA. The goal of the Hall is to preserve our past history and honor the accomplishments and contributions of those who made golf in this area great. Central Links Golf is committed to continuing the tradition established prior to the merger of the KCGA and the Kansas Golf Association.

By their election to the Hall of Fame these four join the likes of Tom Watson, Stan Thirsk, “Duke” Gibson, Karen Schull MacGee,  1927 US Women’s Amateur Champion Miriam Burns Horn, Jim Colbert, Opal Hill and Frank Kirk. Their accomplishments add to the stature the Hall of Fame has built in the short time Central Links Golf has been recognizing those who have contributed so much to the growth of golf in the Kansas City region.
