Players shuffled into the Tiffany Greens Golf Club clubhouse Wednesday afternoon one after another, only to share the same reactions as their fellow competitors once they took a look at StateLine Amateur Tour online leader boards.
Most simply grinned and shook their heads, while others either let a low expletive slip or a matter-of-fact comment lacking any surprise.
What the players were reacting to were the scores of Steve Groom and Michael Hillyard, who posted rounds of five-under and four-under, respectively.
While Groom barely edged Mark Addington, who posted a four-under, 68, Addington positioned himself nicely in the seniors division with seven birdies on the day. Unfortunately, Addington bogied two of his last five holes to offset a pair of birdies in the same stretch.
Groom leaned on six birdies with only a slight hiccup on No. 4 where he walked away with bogey.
Hillyard rolled in six birdies on the day, as well, en route to a open division victory over runner-up Matt Kelley, who shot two-over on the day.
While Hillyard, Groom and even Addington, displayed some explosive golf, it was Aaron Uzelac who supplied the day’s biggest fireworks, acing the 195-yard, par-3 No. 15 with a 5-Iron.
Outside of the seniors and open divisions, Mike Houtteman won the legends division with a one-over, 73 and Logan Truninger claimed the players division with his two-over, 74.
The next StateLine Amateur Tour event is at Creekmoor Golf Club, Sept. 8.
