Stateline Tour Championship is in the Books

Steve Groom, of Raytown, MO fired an even par 71 today on a tough day at Shoal Creek Golf Club to take home the title in the Senior division of the Stateline Tour Championship. Groom was the first round leader after a 72 in round one. Tom Leonard, Greg Loteckie and Ed Walsworth were all close behind and within striking distance, but Groom never faltered and cruised to a four shot victory.

In the Legends division, Fran Ferns, of Leawood, KS won his first Stateline Tour championship with an 8-over 150 total. Ferns shot a 2-over 73 the first day, which gave him a lead of two shots over Ron Brewer and three shots over Jim Lodes and Brad Robinson. Fern’s led by only one with two holes remaining, but was able to hold on for the victory. Ron Brewer took home the title in the net competition with a 141.

In the Players division, first round leader Michael Buckhouse, of Lawrence, KS struggled a bit down the stretch, but was able to secure the championship. Buckhouse, who shot a 1-under 70 in round one got off to a great start and looked like he would cruise to an easy victory, but a few bad holes made things interesting. Ultimately, Buckhouse’s total of 149 would win by 2 over runner-up Ritch Nigh. Greg Hillman took home the net championship with a 141.

Finally, in the Open division, Mark Terranova, of Overland Park, KS, came from behind to secure the title with a 5-over 147. Terranova trailed first round leader Josh Weems by one shot after the opening round, but quickly made up that deficit in round two and played a solid back nine to clinch the win.

Groom Dominates at St. Andrew’s to Grab his Fourth Victory

St. Andrew’s Golf Course – It was a beautiful Friday morning at St. Andrew’s Golf Course for the StateLine players in their final regular tour event. Sunny skies and light winds made a short but tight course play a little easier for the players.

In the open division Michael Greene struck again with another huge round. He shot a 3 under, 68. Michael took advantage of the short front nine with three birdies. Right behind Michael was Mark Terranova. Mark took advantage of the great conditions shooting a 2 under, 69. Mark had a rough start on the front nine but came out on fire on the back nine with birdies on holes 1, 2, 4, 5, and 8.

In the players division Rich Nigh came out on top with a 1 under, 70. Rich had three birdies on the day and eliminated mistakes with only two bogeys.  Marko Ungashick fired off a +1, 72 to come in second. Marko had a colorful scorecard today but came up big with a total of four birdies. He was one under after nine but a double bogey on 13 would change that. This is Marko first victory of the year.

Close behind Marko in third was Kyle Kindler who shot a +2, 73. Kyle played consistent on the tight course and added two birdies on the back nine to finish.

The senior division saw excellent play once again from Steve Groom. This is Steve’s fourth victory of the year. Steve had consistent play all day and added three birdies to shot a 1 under, 70. After the round we asked Steve what he thought about the course, he replied, “I have not played the course since the redesign and the course is a great design and a fun to play. I am glad I decided to play today.”

Behind Steve in the Senior Division was Don Kuehn with a +3, 74. Don struggled at the start with a bogey, double bogey, and bogey start. He bounced back from that with two birdies and consistent play to stay at +3.

And finally in the legends division Jim Lodes shot a +2, 73. After the round we asked Jim what he thought about his round, he replied, “I just tried to play smart golf today. I did not find myself in trouble today and most of the putts were falling.” Jim finished with three birdies on the day.

Second place saw a tight battle between Ronnie Walters and Brad Robinson. Both played consistent throughout the round. They tied for 1st with a +5, 76. Brad had big birdies on holes 17, and 5 to stay in contention.

This is the last regular StateLine Event of 2014. The Tour Championship is October 3rd – 4th at Shoal Creek Golf Course. The deadline for signup is Monday at noon.

Greene Goes on Birdie Streak at Creekmoor

The day was set up perfectly for the Stateline event at The Golf Club at Creekmoor. Clear skies and minimum winds made it a great day to score low. On top of the perfect weather today, members of the StateLine Amateur Tour played a golf course in fantastic shape.

In the Legends division, David Hornaday took advantage of the great day, scoring a 2 under, 70. He started off strong with a 2 under front nine, but then struggled on the tough back nine shooting even. David had a total of six birdies on the day.

The Senior Division had some tough competition today. Heart of America Champions, Greg Loteckie and Don Keuhn continued their outstanding play at Creekmoor; Greg shot a 3 under, 69 and Don shot a 72. Greg also took advantage of an easy front nine shooting 3 under, and had a total of five birdies.

Greg shared the lead with Steve Groom who struggled on the front nine but came out strong on the back shooting 4 under. The best statistic of the day for Steve was that he only had one bogey on the day.

They were followed closely by Tom Leonard who shot a 1 under, 71. Tom had a total of three birdies and two bogeys.

The players division saw some fantastic play today from Michael Buckhouse. Michael saw birdies on holes 5, 12, and 14 but struggled on hole 8 with a double bogey. He finished in 2nd place.

1st place went to Matt Barberich who shot a 2 under, 70. He birdied three of the four par threes and almost had a hole in one on hole 17. He finished with a total of five birdies on the day.

Finally in the open division Michael Greene shot the low score for the day with a 4 under, 68. He continues his incredible 2014 season with another win. Michael had the most birdies on the day with seven, and had no bogeys on the back nine.

Behind him in the open division was UMKC golfer Cameron Wiltse who shot a 2 under, 70. Cameron had six birdies on the day and finished with an incredible birdie putt on the 18th.
